here it is, episode 1.  you can tell it's our first effort, but considering the fact that none of us have any prior experience with this stuff, we're pleased with the result.  old fart and i had low levels with our mics [oops], so i ran them through a pre-amp to make them louder.  that has slightly messed with the sound-quality of our voices.  expect improvements in future episodes.

tonight's the night!

tonight we are recording the first ever portal podcast!  i am sure we will have some technical snags and the like, but we are ready and rarring to go.  we are pleased to welcome joe s to the podcast.  joe is a heavy poster that speaks his mind on all issues and will be leading our rave on discussion.  we will also have chainsaw willie! and old fart with us this evening.

many thanks to the above gentlemen for persevering through last evening's conference call where we sorted through the technological issues that arise when trying to record a four-way conversation ranging from mid-eastern canada to the western united states.

and a personal note: i finally got a headset that works with my mac!  it is the fourth headset i have purchased [fourth time's the charm?], and i ended up having to spend about 10 times more than i had planned, but it works and it works well.  yay!

at long last. . .

i have finally interviewed pete rose!

at 4:30 in the morning i dragged my tired butt out of bed and stumbled into the kitchen for some much-needed coffee. pete was already waiting for my call when i rang him [he is, of course, 5 hours ahead of EST]. we had a very nice conversation, and i really enjoyed learning more about pete the perv. i also laughed a lot-->by 10:30 am [his time] he was already working on a whiskey to accompany his cigarette.  ah, the british lifestyle. . . 

at one point, i was trying to get pete to record a little promo for the podcast. i had in mind something like the promos on radio stations, where all of a sudden you hear something like, "hi, i'm alice cooper, and you're listening to WKRP in Cincinatti!" the only problem was that pete could not remember his line to save his life! i was trying to get him to say, "hi, this is pete rose, and you're listening to the portal-podcast." but he kept forgetting what to call the podcast, and we kept giggling like schoolgirls.   nonetheless, pete persevered and got it down.

unfortunately, chainsaw willie! couldn't join us for the interview as planned. he is away for a bit, but i think he will enjoy hearing the interview.

a successful test recording!

i just got off the phone [or should that be off the skype?] with chainsaw willie!.  we were able to hear each other well and i successfully recorded the conversation.  that means we're a 'go' for the pete rose interview in 8.5 hours!

the sound quality is far from perfect, but if you will be patient with us, over time we will improve our craft.  you will hear this interview [assuming it happens as planned] in the first portal-podcast.  i will likely post snippets of the interview here before the entire podcast is ready.

test interview and other things. . .

so, with any luck i may be conducting a test interview with pete rose tomorrow. pete will be using his neighbour's computer equipment to get the hang of skype. should be a great interview. when it happens for real i am hoping that chainsaw willie! will be a part of the interview because the topic will fit into a segment that is CW's baby.

please send me any questions that you would like to hear pete answer. i look forward to your submissions!

today i developed the music for both the beginning and the end of the interview segment of the podcast. i like it-->they sound good and have a touch of humour to them. i will post some samples up tomorrow because i am too tired to do so at the moment.

ps-i have tweaked some of the colours on this blog. i believe each of the colours is a shade in which the SV has appeared.

small steps on the way. . .

the conference call happened, though not without some technical snags. the five of us, oldfart, bala tzk321, chainsaw willie! and i launched the first portal podcast conference.  just prior to the call i fired up the five or so pieces of needed software on my mac and did some tests. i wanted to make sure that i could record the call and have a decent sound. there is a saying in the music world that says a bad dress rehearsal means a good concert. in this case it went the other way: my tests went perfectly, and i clearly heard the test voice of the skype software. unfortunately, when i began the real conference call, everyone could hear everyone except for me; i could hear no one at all. i ended up closing the recording software and just running the conference call.  it was only later that i realized even my computer could hear everyone-->it had recorded everyone's voices without letting me hear them. . .  :o

aside from that it was a great call. it was fun to hear some voices from my american comrades, and we made some helpful decisions about the various elements that will be a part of the podcast. our next conference call is slated for 11 am EST on the 9th of august. we are hoping that there will be someone across the pond that will be willing to roll up his/her sleeves and join our efforts to make an interesting podcast that will entertain and edify the members of the portal community.

Conference Call Tonight

my fellows SVers,

there will be a conference call this evening at 9pm Eastern Standard Time. the purpose of this call is to discuss the portal podcast that is in the making, including topics like:

>who will do what
>technology issues that need to be overcome

when the time approaches 9pm, EST, make sure your skype is turned on. you should receive a call from me. i will have already added you to my contact list, so if skype asks you to confirm that i can contact you, make sure you do so.

i will be trying to record the call for sole purpose of learning about the software i am working with.

the call will last approx. a half hour, but you can leave it at anytime. it will be a friendly call and i am hoping an important initial step that will eventually lead to a great podcast.

this is your chance to hear what those pennsylvanian mountain roads are like from oldfart, or to discuss amplifiers and water rockets with CW, or just tell mrg what a douche bag he is!
